Lombard, called The Lilac Village ( German and the lilac community), is a suburb of Chicago in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. According to an estimate by the United States Census Bureau in 2004, 42,975 inhabitants lived in the town.
History
The country of today Lombard, which originally belonged to the territory of the Potawatomi Indians, was first settled around 1830 by European immigrants. The Ralph and Morgan Babcock brothers settled in a grove near the DuPage River. To this nucleus is developed in Eastern Lombard, Glen Ellyn and in a westerly direction. In 1837 the town was connected by a stagecoach line with Chicago. Other settlers as Sheldon Peck and Harrier came about 1837 in the area. The House of the Peck family also served as the first school in the area and was restored by the Lombard Historical Society and recorded in 2011 in the National Park Service Network of Freedom.
The connection to the railway network in 1848 gave the local farmers to connect to markets in Chicago and Gewerbeimmonilien was built around the railway station. Lombard was officially established in 1869, named after the Chicago banker and builder Josiah Lombard.
Geography
According to the census of 2010, the city had a total area of 27.1 Quadratkilomtern, of which 98.06 % were land and 1.91% water.
Demography
According to the census of 2000, there were 42 322 inhabitants in 16,487 households and 10,716 families.
The population density was 1686.3 people per square kilometer. There were 17,019 housing units at an average density of development of 678.1 houses per square kilometer.
In the 16487 households living in 29.8 % of cases, children under 18 years; 53.9 % were married couples living together, 7.9 % had a female householder and 35.0 % were non-families. 28.7 % of all households were made up of individuals and 10.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 persons and the average family size was 3.13.
23.0 % of the population was under 18 years old, 7.9% were 18 to 24 years old, 33.4 % between 25 and 44 years old, 21.2% between 45 and 64 years, and 14.5% were 65 years or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males. For every 100 females over the age of 18 years 91.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was 60 015 U.S. dollars per year and the median income for a family was $ 69,686 U.S. dollars per year. The per capita income was 27 667 U.S. dollars per year .. About 2.0 % of families and 3.8 % of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.6% of under eighteen year olds and 4.0 % of those age 65 years or older.
