LON-CAPA

LON -CAPA (the acronym term Learning Online Network with Computer - Assisted Personalized Approach) is an e -learning platform and a learning platform, including CMS (English Course Management System) or LMS ( Learning Management System engl. ), 1999 from the combined e -learning projects, CAPA and Lecture online, created, combining the functionality of both systems.

LON -CAPA is equipped with the usual components of a learning platform, that is, user roles, calendar, e-mail, chat rooms, blogs, development of resources, evaluation of tests, etc. Of the traditional learning platforms it differs in that its many Web can communicate ( at various locations in the world ) with each other. Hence the name LON -CAPA can also be equated with the LON -CAPA network, that is, the total amount of LON - CAPA web server and the specific implementation of these Web servers crosslinking Internet Protocol. LON -CAPA can be understood as the LON -CAPA project, that is, the core team of scientists and programmers who develop and support the LON -CAPA software.

As of 2007 there are more than 130 LON-CAPA-D omänen, where a domain is to be understood as a single subset of the LON - CAPA server. LON -CAPA - domains are usually managed by universities and high schools in the United States and Canada. Among the domains, however, are also some private companies and a growing number of universities in Europe, Asia, South America and Africa. Use of LON -CAPA tools, participating universities and schools own learning resources ( examination papers, websites, etc.) to create and use these shared over the network. This collaborative aspect is characteristic of LON -CAPA.

Another distinguishing feature of LON -CAPA is the ability to create test tasks ( stored as Perl variables ) random numbers apply. In this way, the XML source can generate a single test task a lot of similar, but different test tasks, which may reduce the risk of fraud in an audit situation.

The majority of LON - CAPA learning resources is written in English and focuses on the mathematical sciences and the natural sciences, especially physics and chemistry. For the presentation of formulas and mathematical expressions, the language LaTeX is used. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation ( NSF).

LON -CAPA is open source and license free. Technologies used are mainly Linux, Apache, mod_perl, MySQL, LaTeX and CPAN. The LON - CAPA core team is located at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, USA. Other major LON -CAPA network nodes are located at Simon Fraser University and the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign.
