Londa, Tuscany

Londa is a municipality with 1839 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Florence in the Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers 59 km ². It is located about 30 km northeast of Florence on the river Rincine and Moscia and is part of the Comunità montana Montagna Fiorentina.

The districts include Bucigna, Caiano, Caspriano, Fornace, Petroio, Rata, Rincine, Sambucheta, San Leolino, Vicorati and Vierle.

The neighboring municipalities are Dicomano, Prato Vecchio (AR), Rufina, San Godenzo and Stia (AR).

History

The place was probably inhabited by the Etruscans. Here traces were found of this in the 6th century BC. The grave stele, now preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Florence, dated to the 5th century BC. Many of the districts, such as Bucina, Caiano, Caspriano and Petronio, are of Roman origin, who settled in the area around the 3rd century AD.

In the Middle Ages the town was then controlled by the Guidi and of the Count Bardi, until it fell in 1375 to Florence. Municipality, the municipality in 1776 by ​​a decree of Leopold II, free commune, it was however only in 1835. Heavily damaged the city in 1929 was due to an earthquake and 1944 by the Second World War, in which the bridge was destroyed. Events

  • Palio della Brocca: The Palio takes place in the first two weeks of July and is to be recovered after and filled with wine jug ( Brocca ) named. Here, the districts Caiano, Fornace, Petroio, Rata, Rincine and Vierle as well as the capital of Londa and since 2009 Vicorati compete against each other. Four of the eight places to reach the final, where they compete in six different competitions. These include stilts and tug of war. The first competition after the resumption won Rata, then Caiano won three times the pitcher.
