The London Borough of Croydon [ kɹɔɪdn ] is a city district of London.

Description

The London Borough of Croydon is in south London, is the most populous of all municipalities and grew into an important business center. With the establishment of the administrative region of Greater London in 1965 the district of the County Borough of Croydon and Coulsdon and Purley Urban District was created in the county of Surrey.

The population continued in 2008, composed of 65.0 % White, 13.8 % Asian, 15.0 % black and 0.8 % Chinese.

Croydon has traditionally been an important industrial center and also took in some respects a pioneering role in the development of the transport system of London.

History

Croydon developed during the Middle Ages as a center of production. Here Köhler, tanneries and breweries were operating. In the early 20th century, Croydon was an important industrial area than for the metalworking and automotive construction.

Traffic

1803, the Surrey Iron Railway was opened to Wandsworth, the first ( still drawn by horses) public railway line in the world. In the 19th century, Croydon was connected with the stations East Croydon and South Croydon on the Brighton Main Line of the Southern Railway. On 24 October 1947, in fog, a collision between two commuter trains occurred in the southern entrance of the station South Croydon to the irregular interlocking engagement of the employee. 32 people died, 142 were also injured. This was the worst accident that ever occurred in the Southern Railway.

From 1920 to 1959 was in the urban area of Croydon Airport, the main airport of London, which was replaced by the London Heathrow Airport and London Gatwick Airport. 2000, the tram system Croydon Tramlink was opened, 48 years after the closure of the last tram in London. The Borough of Croydon has about 120 parks and public spaces, which account for about 17.5 km ².
