London Underground 1973 Stock

London Underground 1973 Tube Stock (or short only 73 tube stick ) is a line of electric railcar, which is used on the London Piccadilly Line. According to the usual London Underground Convention, the term derives from the year of the planned commissioning (1973).

History

The 1973 Tube Stock was appointed as part of the extension of the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow Airport. Although the set up on the Piccadilly Line 1959 tube stock was still relatively young, they decided on a completely new series in order to offer passengers the airport more space for luggage can. The trains of 1959 Tube Stock were postponed in the wake of the Northern Line. The first passenger service of the 1973 Tube Stock was part of the opening of the station Hatton Cross on July 19, 1975, the first regular scheduled service followed on 18 August 1975.

The trains have been upgraded from 1995 to 2000 at Bombardier ProRail.

Train composition and details

A train of 1973 Tube Stock is made up of two units, each with three cars. The units normally consist of a Driving Motor Car (DM ), a Trailer Car ( T) and a Uncoupling Non Driving Motor Car ( UNDM ), this results in the normal case, the following ranking: DM- T- UNDM - UNDM T- DM It is a driving motor car equipped with drive and driving, though a Uncoupling Non Driving Motor Car has a drive, but allow only a Rangierfahrschalter to the separation and maneuvering in the depots. A trailer car is equipped with neither drives nor the cab. Some units have to increase the flexibility instead of Uncoupling Non Driving Motor Car Motor Car Driving a second and thus have cabs at both ends.

Compared to the 1959 Tube Stock, which the 1973 Tube Stock was replaced on the Piccadilly Line, a train is thus only of six instead of seven cars, but the individual car bodies were extended. A whole train of 1973 Tube Stock is still about five feet shorter and therefore fits completely on all platforms of the Piccadilly Line, this was for the later planned conversion to one person operation ( one-man operation ) necessary because the necessary mirrors or monitors only to the platforms can be mounted. However, the trains were still delivered for operation with Guards, who supervised the closing of the doors. To take account of the use to Heathrow Airport, was created directly at the doors of space to facilitate the transport of the luggage of the passengers. The car bodies were clad with unpainted aluminum, only the front face below the cab window was painted red.

As part of the modernization of the vehicles then the Underground livery received (white car body with blue stripes on the floor, doors and cab in red), next to the new paint the vehicles received new destination displays in LCD technology. The interior was redesigned in the modernization, the current mix of longitudinal and transverse seats has been replaced by a pure longitudinal seating, the open space next to the doors were enlarged and mounted in these areas a padded ledge to lean on. In addition, the interior has been equipped with LED displays for passenger information. At the führerstand loose ends of the carriages additional windows have been installed around the view of the neighboring car allow. Another new feature is the revised front doors on the driver's cabs, they were given a folding stairs with handrails so that in case of evacuation of the train, the vehicle can be and thus leave forward faster than before. Before modernization small ladders were in such a case, use that one had to climb back down.

Use

So far, these trains were only on the Piccadilly line used in passenger service are exclusively six - car trains are used, however, was up to the attitude in 1994, a 3 -car train with two cabs in oscillation mode on the branch line between Holborn and Aldwych employed. Since the upgrade, an insert on the other lines, without further measures is not possible.
