London Underground 1983 Tube Stock (or short only 83 Tube floor) was a series of electric railcars, which was used at the London Jubilee Line. According to the usual conventions London Underground, the term of the proposed year of entry (1983 ) derives.

History

The used on the Jubilee Line since its opening in 1979 1972 Mk.II tube stick from the beginning was only a temporary solution and it was planned to commission the construction phases 2 and 3 of the Jubilee Line operates a fleet of 60 trains a new series for to procure this line. It was envisaged that the existing features of the 1972 Mk.II tube stick be moved to the Bakerloo Line to replace the aging trains there Series 1938 Tube Stock. Since the construction of the other phases of construction of the Jubilee Line continually delayed - and ultimately were never built as planned - it came out in May 1982 on the order of 15 trains of the type 1983 Tube Stock, as the trains of 1938 Tube Stock on the Bakerloo Line became increasingly unreliable and urgent to replace were. The first car of the 1983 Tube Stock were delivered in late 1983 and tested by the custodian of Neasden. The use of the passenger traffic followed from 2 May 1984. Since deployment of the new series the old trains the Bakerloo Line has already been replaced by other vehicles that were released by reduction in schedule, who released trains of 1972 Tube Stock Mk.II were notwithstanding moved from the original plans for the Northern Line. As passenger numbers rose again, fell in 1986, the decision a second series of 16 ½ trains to order. The trains of the second series differed only in minor details from the original, and arrived on the 27th November 1987 in use.

For the Jubilee Line Extension additional vehicles were in the 1990s then required initial considerations for a mixed use of old and new trains, however, were quickly discarded because one of the new series to the trains of 1983 Tube Stock would have to adapt, as for example for the stations with platform screen doors a single door assembly was necessary for all trains. A reconstruction of the trains of 1983 Tube Stock was also not implemented because the costs of this would have been too high. So it came to a complete replacement of the trains through the new features of the 1996 Tube Stock, which were used as of 24 December 1997 on the Jubilee Line. The last use of the 1983 Tube Stock was followed on 9 July 1998. Plans for further use of the series were discarded because the vehicles appeared unsuitable, so the cars were stored, although some of the features of the second series is not even 10 years service were.

Many cars were scrapped in Rotherham, others were parked in various places. A car being kept by the London Transport Museum, a few others are outside of the rail network as a studio for Radio Lollipop at Great Ormond Street Hospital, or as artists studios on the disused Bond Street viaduct in Shoreditch.

Train composition and details

A train of the 1983 Tube Stock consists of 2 half moves with 3 cars, so it results in a 6-car train. A car offered 48 seats. A half move here was composed of two motor car with cab ( Driving Motor Car ) at the ends and an intermediate car unangetriebenem (Trailer Car). In the development of trains many features were taken from the D78 floor, so the chassis, brakes and drive are similar to the single-leaf doors were taken from D78 floor. This unique vehicles for the London tube lines feature should turn out as main drawback of this series, since the narrower doors boarding and alighting at stations took longer than for vehicles with double doors. Problem compared to the D floor was mainly the equipment with only three rather than four doors, which was a hindrance to rapid passenger.

Use

The trains were used exclusively on the Jubilee Line of the London Underground, where the vehicles were replaced by the 1996 Tube Stock. A be covered later use on the Piccadilly Line failed due to the shortcomings of the series, which appeared particularly problematic in mixed use with other series. The necessary widening of the doors would have been too costly. By the summer of 1998, the 1983 Tube Stock trains were used on the Jubilee Line, the last in passenger service took place on 9 July 1998. The cars were then discarded as they could not be used because of its design with the narrow doors on other lines.
