London Underground 1992 Stock

London Underground 1992 Tube Stock (or short only 92 tube stick ) is a line of electric railcar, which is used in London on the Central Line and the Waterloo & City Line. According to the usual conventions London Underground, the term of the proposed year of entry (1992 ) derives.

History

The order of the 1992 Tube Stock was the testing of three different prototypes, the 1986 Tube Stock, ahead. After completion of testing 85 8- car trains of 1992 Tube Stock were ordered from ABB in Derby, to replace the 1962 Tube Stock on the Central Line in 1989. The first train on the Central Line came on 7 April 1993 for use.

Train composition and details

The 1992 Tube Stock is made of 2 -car units, which form from the following four different types of cars:

  • Driving A Motor Car (DM): These cars are equipped with a driving cab, pantographs and drive motors.
  • Non- Driving Motor Car B ( NDM ): These cars do not have a driver's cab and the pantograph, but are driven, the necessary power gets these cars from the coupled second car of the unit.
  • Non- Driving Motor Car C ( NDM ): These cars have Motor Car B own pantograph, in contrast to non -driving and are also driven.
  • Non- Driving Motor Car D ( NDM ): These cars correspond to a Non- Driving Motor Car C, but are also equipped with a deicing system.

From these four types of cars, three different types of two -car units are formed: AB Units, BC Units and BD units. This 2 -car units to any 4 -, 6 - or 8 - car trains couple, as long as a cab is available at both ends of the train. There are also EF units for use on the Waterloo & City Line, this corresponds in principle to an AB unit, but the EF units are only be coupled together, as they train for the two lines now through different conversions from one another differ. For example, the Central Line for Automatic Train Protection ( Automatic Train Protection ) and Automatic Train are now operational ( automated driving) equipped while still operated manually on the Waterloo & City Line.

As an innovation, the vehicles received wider doors to allow for faster boarding and alighting. In addition, the doors are first performed on the outer side of the car body. Further improvements for passengers were the larger window and the beginning of automatic to existing digital station announcement. The 1992 Tube Stock is the first series of London Underground, which uses computer technology in many places. This also allowed us to upgrade the trains in September 1998 via a software update. This high performance operation called update allows the vehicles a higher acceleration, better braking performance and higher top speed.

British Rail Class 482

Another five 4-car trains were ordered by British Rail as a British Rail Class 482 trains for the replacement of the Class 487 from 1940 on the Waterloo & City Line, which was not yet a part of London Underground. In contrast to the trains of the Central Line, the car with the Type E in principle are similar to those of type A and type F where type B are referred to as Driving Motor Car E and Non- Driving Motor Car F, Nevertheless, the EF- units can not couple with other units, as they will have different trains for the Central Line through several modifications of which the Waterloo & City Line. For example, the Central Line are now equipped for automatic train protection and automatic train operation while still operated manually on the Waterloo & City Line. Initially, these vehicles differed only in the paint, while the 1992 Tube Stock in the London Underground colors were painted, the vehicles of Class 482 were delivered in the colors of Network Southeast. Since modernization in 2006, these trains now also bear the London Underground colors.

These vehicles came on 1 April 1994 with the surrender of the Waterloo & City Line to London Underground and have since been referred to as 1992 Tube Stock.

Problems

The vehicles were due to the new technology in many parts initially prone to errors, which led to a number of small modifications in the early days of the insert. In 2003, entire fleet was temporarily shut down after the derailment of a train in the station Chancery Lane on 25 January 2003. Cause of the derailment was an engine that had come loose from the truck and fell on the tracks. By then necessary troubleshooting and subsequent modification of the entire fleet had to take the Central Line to set completely and until 12 April 2003 are partly to March 14.

Use

The 1992 Tube Stock is used on the Central Line, here come the plan operating exclusively 8- car trains are used, although in theory, shorter trains would be possible and permissible. Coupled Five each of two EF- units trains arrive on the Waterloo & City Line used. The vehicles can not readily be used on other lines, this also applies to the exchange of cars of the 1992 Tube Stock between the two lines.
