London Underground D78 Stock

London Underground D78 Stock (or short only D floor) is a line of electric railcar for the wide gauge tracks of the London Underground, which is used on the District Line. The entire fleet is expected to be replaced by the new S stock in 2015. The name derives from the first letter from the application area ( District Line ) and the proposed year of entry (1978).

History

The series was ordered in 1976 to replace the Vorkriegs-CO/CP-Stock and the postwar -R floor, which were still used at that time on the District Line. The 75 trains were built by Metro - Cammell and used from January 28, 1980 in passenger service, the last vehicles were delivered in 1983. From summer 2005 until the year 2008, the cars were thoroughly modernized by Bombardier Transportation in Derby.

Train composition and details

The D floor consists of six trains, each consisting of a Driving Motor Car (DM), Trailer Car ( T) and a Uncoupling Non Driving Motor Car ( UNDM ) exist. A Driving Motor Car is equipped with a driving cab and drive motors; Uncoupling a Non- Driving Motor Car has even drive motors, but does not offer full cab, but only a Rangierfahrschalter to allow maneuvering in the depots. 20 of 150 half moves have instead of Uncoupling Non Driving Motor Car Motor Car Driving a second, and can therefore be used as a half train in passenger service. The other half moves may only be used coupled with another half move outside the depots. In passenger service on the District Line only entire 6- car trains are currently being used, but were, for example, from 1985 to 1987 half moves with two cabs on the former East London Line used.

The trains were, as was usual, delivered with unpainted aluminum car bodies, only the front, below the cab was painted red. As new vehicles were then given an improved suspension and an ergonomically improved cab. In modernizing the vehicles received a paint job in today's conventional underground colors ( red cab and doors, car body white with a blue stripe below). The D floor was thus the last series of the London Underground, which was not painted in service. In modernizing the vehicles also received a redesigned interior and a passenger information system with automatic station announcements and LED displays in the vehicles, the outer target ads have been replaced by LED displays and the first series won the D Stock and electronic destination displays on the sides of the vehicles.

Use

Currently, the D stock is used on the District Line, an exception are the trips between Wimbledon and Edgware Road, as its platforms at the stations Notting Hill Gate, Bayswater, Paddington and Edgware Road are too short for trains of type D78. Here C69 and C77 features of the series are used. From 1985 to 1987, the D Stock was also on the East London Line is used to allow alterations to the there normally used features of the A60/A62 Stock.
