London Underground S7 and S8 Stock

The London Underground S Stock is a series of electric multiple units used on the Circle Line, District Line, Hammersmith & City Line and Metropolitan Line of the London Underground or will be. There are made two versions, with either eight-car units ( S8) for the Metropolitan Line or seven (S7 ) for the remaining lines. The name is derived from the proposed area of operation, namely, all the sub-surface lines, Eng. subsurface. On the Metropolitan Line trains are already being used, the other lines are to follow in 2012 to 2013.

Facts and Figures

The S Stock is part of Movia family of Bombardier. Be delivered from 2010 to 2013 133 S7- S8 units and 58 units, which are fully air-conditioned and have braking force back winning regenerative braking, which can recover 20% of the braking energy and feed it into the grid.

The trains can with 1.3 m / s ² accelerate faster than the previous series. However, the top speed is limited to 62 mph (100 km / h), which is 8 mph slower than the maximum speed of the A Stock, but faster than the C stick or the D floor. If new and old trains operated together, the performance of the S stocks must be reduced so that no gaps in operational procedures. The S8 trains have 306 seats, whereas the older A floor had 448 seats; However, the S floor has 25% more standing room and has more room for strollers and wheelchairs.

A new feature is for London Underground, that there is no separate cars more and a passageway through the entire train is possible. In addition, the entire train is under video surveillance, so that the driver can see what is happening behind him.

The trains have a modern passenger information system ( FIS short, English passenger information system. ), Which includes the usual automated announcements and point -light displays at the following locations:

  • Three-line ads on the outside of the ends of the train: Line, Target, and ( at the Metropolitan Line) mode (fast, semi -fast, stopping at all stations )
  • One-line ads on each car outside, visible from the platform of: line, destination and mode
  • One-line displays in the train: each adapted: line, target, mode, current station, nearest railway station, safety

As usual in the Metropolitan Line, located in the S8 trains in addition to the lateral longitudinal seats ( engl. longitudinal seating ) that can be folded in some places, to get more space for wheelchairs, strollers and standing, some groups of four seats, so seats with or against the direction of travel (English reverse seating ), since the longitudinal seats on life are uncomfortable by the length of the Metropolitan Line to the suburbs in the northwest. In S7 variant is completely omitted reverse seats.
