Long Eaton

Long Eaton is a town in England, located in the southwestern corner of the county of Derbyshire ( East Midlands). Since 1974 it belongs to the District Erewash. Long Eaton is located southwest of Nottingham in the vicinity of the River Trent and seven miles.

History

Long Eaton was first mentioned in the Doomsday Book as Aitone of 1086. In 1228, the city won the " Long " prefix due to the length of the city. The " Great Fire of Long Eaton " in 1694 destroyed 14 houses and several other buildings on the market square. In the 19th century, Long Eaton became the center of the lace-making. In 1921 the border of Long Eaton advanced to Wilsthorpe and parts of the cities Sandiacre and Sawley

Architecture

The Palladian Long Eaton Town Hall is now part of the larger Long Eaton Town Hall complex in the late 1980s. The parish church of St.Laurence is, according to traditions dating back to the 11th century, possibly built by Knut the Great. However, it is more realistic dating to the 12th century, after the Norman Conquest of England.

Education

Long Eaton has two state secondary schools, the The Long Eaton School and Business and Enterprise College Wilsthorpe, and several elementary schools. There are also the Trent College and the Elms School for children aged 3 to 11 years.
