This format is used in some digital voice recorders manufactured by Sony for use. In its original form it was intended as a pure audio system for voice recording in low quality and low bit rate. The current version of LPEC offers but at the highest currently supported bit rate of 128kbps, a sound quality that is significantly higher than at the same bit rate of MP3 and thus is very well suited for music recording.

The format is not yet with the exception of Voice Recorders largely unknown. Even on the Internet any information about LPEC are practically available. As a software to create, edit, and play only on supported voice recorders from Sony supplied "Digital Voice Editor" as well as a playback codec for Windows Media Player exist.
