Longford, Tasmania

Longford is a town in the north east of Tasmania in Australia. It is located 21 km south of the city of Launceston to Illawarra Main Road, which connects the Bass Highway and Midland Highway.

Before European settlers arrived, the area was the tribal land of Panninher Aborigines in northern Tasmania's Midland. The first settlers of Norfolk Island reached this area in 1807. The town was founded in 1813, when Governor Lachlan Macquarie of guaranteed land rights for the settlers. The town was renamed in 1833 in Longford after a town in Ireland, the area of the present town was originally called Norfolk Plains. Today this place is frequently visited by tourists visiting the many historic buildings.

Not far from Longford are the Brickendon and Woolmers Estates, two agricultural property, registered and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its construction and rose gardens in the Australian Heritage List.

  • Albert Solomon was one of Tasmania's prime minister, who resided there from 1912 to 1914.
  • Walter Lee, the three-time Prime Minister, was born in Longford and grew up there.
