Longford

Longford ( Irish: Longford ) is a city in the central inland of the Republic of Ireland and the administrative center of the county of the same name.

History

Presence

The population Longfords including surrounding areas was determined in Census 2006 about 13,000 people; live with almost 40 % of the population of the county in Longford Town and its immediate vicinity. The city is the seat of the Bishop Roman Catholic Diocese of Ardagh.

Located in the center of the country - between Sligo and Galway on Ireland's west coast on the one hand and capital located on the east coast Dublin on the other hand - Longford located 122 km from Dublin; to Sligo there are 91 kilometers.

Traffic

By the railway company Iarnród Éireann the city is served by Intercity to the railway network in Ireland; the journey time to Dublin is just under two hours. The train station in Longford was opened in 1855.

Longford is located on the N4 from Dublin to Sligo, and thus to one of the key national roads in the country. In Longford also branches off from the N4 N5 Castlebar to Westport in County Mayo, so that cross a variety of car tourist destination with Mayo and Connemara Longford. Motorists on the N5 must traverse the city - but this rarely results in congestion due to a well-functioning urban traffic control - while for N4 since 1995, there is a bypass.

Southeast of the city, close to the Royal Canal Abbeyshrule a small regional airport with a growing volume of business.

Sport and Leisure

In the local football stadium Flancare Park find the home games of the football club founded in 1924 Longford Town FC instead.

The Lough Ree, one of the three major lakes in the course of the Shannon, a few kilometers away in the south-west of Longford.
