Longin Pastusiak

Longin Hieronim Pastusiak ( born August 22, 1935 in Łódź) is a Polish politician, historian and political scientist, Americanist, a functionary in the Polska Zjednoczona partia Robotnicza ( Polish United Workers' Party - PZPR ), in the years 1991 to 2001 Member of the Sejm in the I. , II and III. Election period, from 19 October 2001 to October 18, 2005 Senator and Marshal of the Senate in the Fifth legislature.

Scientific activity

In 1959 he finished his Master's degree at the Woodrow Wilson School of Foreign Affairs and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and in 1960 he became Master of the Faculty of Journalism and Political Sciences of the University of Warsaw. He received his doctorate from the American University in Washington and at the School of Social Sciences at the Central Committee of the PZPR in Warsaw. He habilitated in 1967 at the Historical Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It was founded in 1978 to associate professor in 1986 to full professor.

From 1963 to 1994 he worked at the Polish Institute of International Affairs. He is the author of numerous publications in the fields of history of the United States and Polish- American relations. He was chairman of the "Polish -Canadian society," deputy chairman of the "Polish - Korean Society ," was a member of the Euro- Atlantic Association and the Club of Rome. He headed the Polish public broadcaster TVP1 the program anecdotes of the President of the President of the United States and published a book on the subject.

Political activity

In 1961 he joined the PZPR and remained a member until the dissolution of the party in 1990.

In the same year he joined the newly founded Socjaldemokracja Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej ( Social Democracy of the Republic of Poland - SdRP ). From the list of this party, he was a Member of the Sejm in the I, II and III. Election period.

Between 1991 and 1997 he was Deputy Chairman of the Group of Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej ( Democratic Left Alliance - SLD). From 1997 to 2001 he was Deputy Chairman of the Commission for Foreign Affairs of the Sejm and Chairman of the Permanent Delegation of the Sejm and the Senate at the Assembly of Western European Union. In 2000 he became head of the Sub-Commission on Transatlantic relations in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, a year later, he became vice chairman of the Socialist Group in the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO.

He was Senator for the constituency of Danzig in 2001. On 20 October 2001 he was elected Marshal of the Senate. He was a member of the Electoral Commission of Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz in the presidential elections of 2005. In the 2005 parliamentary elections, he applied again for a Senate seat, but had no success. On 1 June 2008 he was elected Deputy Chairman of the SLD.

He is married to Anna Ochab, the daughter of Edward Ochab and has a daughter and a son.
