Longus colli muscle

Pars recta: - Front sides of the neck vertebrae 5-7 - Front sides of the thoracic vertebrae 1-3

Inferior oblique part: - Front sides of the thoracic vertebrae 1-3

Pars recta: - Front sides of the neck vertebrae 2-4

Pars obliqua: - ( Anterior tubercles of ) Transverse processes of the cervical vertebrae 5 and 6

Both sides: Forward flexion of the cervical spine

The musculus longus colli, even musculus longus cervicis called (from the Latin musculus " muscle " longus "long " collum " neck " or Greek kerbikárion " head holder " ) to German long neck muscle is a striated muscle (skeletal muscle), which at the ventral part of the cervical spine between the first cervical vertebra ( the atlas ) and third thoracic vertebrae runs. The muscle can be divided into three parts:

  • Pars obliqua musculi longus colli superior: Origin anterior tubercles of the transverse processes of the cervical vertebrae 3-5, approach anterior tubercle of the atlas
  • Pars recta musculi longus colli ( located between the other two components ); Origin front sides of the neck vertebrae 5-7 and front sides of the thoracic vertebra 1-3, Neck Front pages of the cervical vertebrae 2-4
  • Pars obliqua musculi inferior longi colli: Origin front sides of the thoracic vertebra 1-3, Neck anterior tubercles of the transverse processes of the cervical vertebrae 5 and 6

Function

The one-sided insulated musculus longus colli leads up to his contraction of flexion to the side of the active muscle and rotation ( rotation) of the cervical spine. At both sides contraction it leads to a forward flexion ( forward bending ) of the cervical spine.

Clinical Significance

The muscle is often injured by whiplash, which have their origin mostly in car accidents.

Some scientists lead the faulty lordosis of whiplash injury patients back to this muscle.
