Lonnie Donegan

Anthony James " Lonnie " Donegan ( born April 29, 1931 in Glasgow, Scotland; † 3 November 2002 in Peterborough, England ) was a British folk and skiffle musician, and 1956-1962 more than 30 hits in the UK could place the American charts.

Lonnie Donegan had a great influence on the development of rock music. He sparked a skiffle shaft, during which he was called "King of Skiffle " and a large number of talents inspired, including John Lennon, Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Rory Gallagher, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Chris Farlowe and Van Morrison.

Life and work

Donegan moved at a young age with his mother to London after his parents were divorced. Inspired by the blues music that he heard on the radio, he began to learn to play guitar.

In 1952 he formed his own band, which, having already played Tony Donegan Jazz Band in the band of Chris Barber banjo. At a gig as the opening act of the blues musician Lonnie Johnson, the announcer said to have come with the names mixed up and the group have announced as " Tony Johnson " and " Lonnie Donegan ". He finally kept this name for a stage name.

In 1956, Donegan had his first hit with a fast version of Lead Bellys rock Iceland Line, which he recorded with Chris Barber's Jazz Band, in which he played at that time yet. After the separation of Barber was followed by other hits, including Cumberland Gap ( 1957), Battle of New Orleans ( 1959), My Old Man's a Dustman (1960) and Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour (on the Bedpost Overnight? ) (1961 ).

Donegan success continued until 1962, and until 1969 should succeed with I'll Never Fall in Love Again Tom Jones once again a hit. In between, he regularly performed in Hamburg, where he ( as before Chris Barber) many young musicians under the collective term Hamburg scene became known later influenced. In 1974 he recorded two LPs with the German jazz and Skiffleband leash man.

In 1976, he suffered his first heart attack in the U.S. and had to undergo surgery.

In 1978 he resumed his earlier hits with known colleagues such as Ringo Starr, Elton John, Brian May, Ron Wood and Albert Lee scratch. The album was released under the title Putting on the style.

1992 Donegan needed a new heart surgery for another heart attack and in 1999 he entered at the Glastonbury Festival on. In 2000, he brought with Van Morrison The Skiffle Sessions Album - Live In Belfast out, and in the same year, he finally received the Order of the British Empire.

Donegan died in 2002 on a tour of the United Kingdom, shortly before he was to appear at a concert in memory of George Harrison.
