Features

The strongly-built moths have a forewing length of 47-78 millimeters. Their color is variable, ranging from a bright reddish brown to pale gray-brown or a very dark brown (formative carteri ). They are usually light brown, with a large dark brown area on the fore wings, which includes a characteristic of the type white arrow and an equally colored point. The legs are dark brown, the white sensor. Along the head and thorax runs a broad, irregular black band. The forewing outer margin is wavy irregular.

The caterpillars have a green colored head with black stripes. The pale whitish or yellowish green body is provided on each segment with blue-black thorns that make the kind of distinctive. The Analhorn is as black blue. Below the lateral spines is a creamy yellow colored spot.

Distribution and habitat

The species colonized large parts of the tropical and subtropical Africa. In Uganda, the Congo and West Africa are encountered especially the dark brown color variant. Lophostethus dumolinii colonized several habitats with dense bush vegetation.

The caterpillars feed on Lindenblättrigem Hibiscus (Hibiscus tiliaceus ), Hibiscus panduraeformis, Dombeya, wax trees ( Carissa ), African baobab (Adansonia digitata ) and Grewia occidentalis.
