Lopra

Lopra ( Danish name: Lobra ) is a place of the Faroe Islands on the island Suðuroy.

Lopra located south of the east coast of Suðuroy at the end of the fjord Lopransfjørður, which flows into the Vágsfjørður. At the same time here is an isthmus, is the 3.4 -acre Lopranshólmur prior to its West Coast, one of the eleven bars of the Faroe Islands.

The town was founded in 1834, as here, a whaling station went into operation. In the 19th century, the hunting of large whales in the waters around the Faroe Islands had a great economic importance. After the stocks fell, you saw it from, and the station of Lopra in 1953 - one of the last - closed. Today, instead, there is a fish processing industry.

The road to the south, which rises here in serpentine leads, at bird rock Beinisvørð past the west coast of the island. The Faroese birdlife can be nicely observed here.
