Lord Frederick Cavendish

Lord Frederick Charles Cavendish ( born November 30, 1836 in Eastbourne, Sussex, † May 6, 1882 in Dublin ) was a British Liberal politician.

From 1865 to 1882 he was a member of the House of Commons. His mentor was the British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, who in May 1882 appointed him as Chief Secretary for Ireland.

Hardly a few hours in office, he was murdered and the Under-Secretary for Ireland Thomas Henry Burke of the nationalist grouping Irish National Invincibles in the Phoenix Park in Dublin. This attack is now known as the Phoenix Park murders.

Cavendish was the second son of William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire, Eastbourne, Sussex. His brother Spencer Cavendish, 8th Duke of Devonshire, was before his conversion to the House of Lords under the courtesy title Marquess of Hartington also a liberal politician.
