Lord High Constable of England
The Lord High Constable of England was originally the commander of the royal army and Master of the Horse in the royal court. He was also, together with the Earl Marshal Chairman of the noble court and the Court of Honor, in which, inter alia, the misuse of heraldic symbols or defamation were negotiated. In Lehnszeiten also the court-martial was administered by the Lord High Constable. The Lord High Constable is the seventh among the Great Officers of State. In the ranking above is the Lord Great Chamberlain and the Earl Marshal below.
The title of Lord High Constable was first awarded in 1139 by Matilda of England, together with the noble title of Earl of Hereford Miles de Gloucester and came through hereditary succession to the Bohuns, Earl of Essex, then to the Staffords, Dukes of Buckingham. After 1509 Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham had lost in a process all the titles and possessions, the office of Lord High Constable as well as the office of Lord Great Chamberlain of King Henry VIII, the crown was incorporated. Since then, the office shall be filled only for the coronation of British monarchs.
