Situation

In many major cities ( cities, urban districts and urban districts, major district towns as well as large independent cities, medium cities and many large county's towns ) the head of the administration bears the official title of Lord Mayor (or Mayor ). In addition, there are usually one or more other, this subordinate mayor and department heads responsible for specific topics. This can be directly related to the population of the city (Baden- Württemberg: from 20,000 inhabitants, Saarland: from 30,000 inhabitants) or with a partly historical reasons specific designation of the city ( Bavaria district town, some with less than 20,000 inhabitants) are related. In North Rhine -Westphalia is only available in urban districts Lord Mayor, which leads, for example, that the city of Neuss ( 151,000 inhabitants) is performed in the Rhein- Kreis Neuss by a mayor. In Lübeck ( 211,500 inhabitants), the mayor is, traditionally non mayor, but the mayor. This tradition shares the Hanseatic city with the much smaller Wismar.

These and other details - such as the question of who chooses the mayor - are regulated differently depending on the province and in the appropriate municipal code.

When the Lord Mayor of the main administrative officer of the city council is also the name of the city administration authority " The Mayor ".

In Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg the title of Lord Mayor is not used. The head of the city government are called there, " Mayor and President of the Senate" (Bremen), " Mayor " (Hamburg) and " Mayor " (Berlin). These are political office holders who are employed for this work in the community in part time or full time. In some municipalities they also concrete topics are assumed unless the chairman often revert to the Treasury.
