Loren James Shriver ( born September 23, 1944 in Jefferson, Iowa, United States) is a former American astronaut.

Shriver received in 1967 a Bachelor in Aerospace Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy in 1968 and a master's in aerospace engineering from Purdue University.

1967 Shriver went to the United States Air Force and was from 1969 to 1973 pilot instructor at the Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma. From 1973 to 1974 he was stationed in Thailand. In 1975, he was educated at Edwards Air Force Base as a test pilot and as such from 1976 also used.

Astronauts activity

In January 1978, Shriver was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate. Shriver in 1993, Space Shuttle Program Manager for Launch Integration. In 1997 he was deputy director for shuttle launches and payloads at the Kennedy Space Center. From 2000 to 2006 he was deputy program manager of the Space Shuttle program.

After the Challenger disaster of this flight was canceled.

STS -31

Shriver's second flight began on 24 April 1990 as commander of the space shuttle Discovery. The main task of STS -31 was the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope. In addition, with an IMAX camera shots were taken from the earth.
