Lorenz Kellner

Lorenz Kellner ( born January 29, 1811 in Kalteneber, a district of the Holy City; † August 18, 1892 in Trier ) was a Catholic educator of the 19th century.

Life

The son of the teacher and student Heinrich Pestalozzi waiter attended from 1816 to 1822 the primary school in the Holy City, from 1822 to 1828 the schools in Heiligenstadt and Hildesheim. An objective shared by his study of Catholic theology, he could not perform due to financial reasons. Instead, he attended 1828-1831, Protestant teacher seminar in Magdeburg, where he largely financed his living by private tutoring. Until 1831 he attended the teachers' seminar in Magdeburg. From 1831 to 1836 he worked as a teacher at the elementary schools in Mackenrode and Erfurt from 1833 as Rector. From 1836 to 1848 he was a teacher at the seminar led by his father newly established teacher training college in Heiligenstadt. In 1838 his first wife died after only 2 years of marriage. In 1848 he became the government and school board in the district Marienwerderstraße. From 1848-1849 he was also a member of the Prussian House of Representatives. From 1855 to 1886 he worked as a government and Board of Education, Trier. On his 75th birthday, on 29 January 1886, he and his honored principles with over 50 000 signatures. From 1867-1870 he was a deputy of the constituency of St. Wendel in the Prussian Landtag. 1863 awarded him the Academy of Münster philosophical doctorate honorary. In 1871 he was appointed a Privy Councillor. From 1872 he was a member of the Commission for the advice of an elementary school and seminar being. In the cultural struggle between the Prussian state and the Catholic Church 's position remained faithful despite its church setting untouched due to good relations with the Trier district president. The Catholic Teachers' Association named him an honorary member in 1891. Lorenz Kellner is one of the major Catholic educators of the 19th century. In addition to his educational, administrative and political activities he also left an extensive written work. With a special commitment he strove to improve the material and social situation of the elementary school teacher. In 1892 he died from the effects of influenza and was buried in the cemetery of the parish of St. Paulin in Trier in an honorary grave. In the birthplace Kalteneber with the house (now a suburb of Heiligenstadt ) there is a Lorenz Kellner Street. In Heiligenstadt itself, there are a Lorenz Kellner- school and in Trier also carries a street its name.
