Lorenz von Westenrieder

Lorenz von Westenrieder ( born August 1, 1748 in Munich, † March 15, 1829 ) was a German theologian, educator, historian and publicist of the Enlightenment. He is renowned for his discovery of the Bavarian history, but also dealt with the Bavaria of the present. In addition, he was a Munich local patriot.

Life and work

Westenrieder was ordained as a Jesuit school in 1771. After the dissolution of the Jesuit order in 1773 he became professor of poetics and rhetoric at the Gymnasium in Landshut and 1774 for rhetoric in Munich. 1776, he was appointed Bücherzensurrat and 1799 he was director of the censorship of books Commission. In 1777 he became a member in 1779 and secretary of the historical class of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, of which he became director in 1808. In this role, he championed the development of lithography and contributed funds for the construction of the first large stone printing press at. Beginning of 1779 he joined the Illuminati, but he left again at the end. 1786, he was appointed spiritual advice and canon of Munich, 1813, he was knighted.

Westenrieder was a supporter of moderate Enlightenment. In addition to its historical and theoretical works, he also wrote novels and plays. Its historical and literary work includes more than a hundred volumes, which often deal with the socio-cultural development of Munich and its inhabitants. Westenrieder is considered one of the most important writers of the Bavarian 18th and early 19th century.

Conception of art
