Lorenzo Crounse

Lorenzo Crounse ( born January 27, 1834 in Sharon, Schoharie County, New York, † May 13, 1909 in Omaha, Nebraska ) was an American politician and 1893-1895, the ninth Governor of the State of Nebraska.

Early years and political rise

Lorenzo Crounse grew up in upstate New York, where he attended the local schools. His subsequent study of law, he financed the fact that he worked as a teacher by the way. After he was admitted to the bar in 1857, he opened in Fort Plain (New York), a law firm. During the Civil War, he fought to 1862 in the Union army, but had to retire from military service due to an injury in 1862. Two years later he moved to Nebraska, where he was also active as a lawyer.

In 1866, Crounse was elected to the Territorial Parliament of Nebraska. He was also a member of the Constituent Assembly of that State. Between 1867 and 1873 he was a judge at his state Supreme Court. From 1873 to 1877 he sat as an MP in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. After that, he was from 1879 to 1883 head of the U.S. tax authorities in Nebraska ( Internal Revenue Collector). Between 1891 and 1892 he was Deputy Secretary of the Treasury. As a member of the Republican Party, he was a delegate to the 1880 Republican National Convention. In November 1892 he was elected governor of Nebraska.

Governor of Nebraska

Crounses two-year term began on January 13, 1893. During his reign new laws regarding the railway companies were adopted and government spending were cut. Against three members of his administration impeachment proceedings were initiated because of some misconduct. Crounse renounced in 1894 on a renewed candidacy and therefore resigned on January 3, 1895 from the office.

After the end of his governorship Crounse remained politically active. In 1900 he was elected for a term in the Senate from Nebraska. Ex - Governor Crounse died in May 1909. He was married to Mary E. Griffiths, with whom he had four children.
