Lorenzo Mascheroni

Lorenzo Mascheroni (* May 13, 1750 in Bergamo, † July 14, 1800 in Paris) was an Italian mathematician.

In 1786 Mascheroni was professor of mathematics at the University of Pavia, after he had made his name with a book on statics. In 1789 he became rector of the university. In 1790 he published in his work Adnotationes ad calculum integral Euleri some integral representations of Euler - Mascheroni constant and calculated it to 32 decimal places, of which the points are, however, 19 to 21 (probably due to a transmission error) is incorrectly specified. He is not called the constant, as is often claimed, with γ, but only γ with A. The origin of the term is an open problem.

In 1797 he proved that all geometric compass constructions could be carried out alone. The same sentence was 120 years ago already proved Georg Mohr, his evidence was, however, forgotten, so that the statement will be named today after two mathematicians as a set of Mohr- Mascheroni.
