Geography

Geographical Location

Lorsch, referred to as the " Gateway to the mountain road ", is located about 5 kilometers west of the actual mountain road, halfway between Einhausen and Heppenheim. It is situated in the Upper Rhine Plain only slightly to the west of the Odenwald between Darmstadt and Mannheim in the north to the south. The city is close to the west of the lower reaches of the Weschnitz. In the southeast of the city lies the nature reserve Weschnitzinsel.

Neighboring communities

Lorsch is bordered to the north by the municipality Einhausen and the town of Bensheim, on the east by the town of Heppenheim, in the southeast on the community of Laudenbach and the city Hemsbach (both Rhein- Neckar-Kreis, Baden- Württemberg), in the south on the town Lampert Home, and to the west by the city Buerstadt.

History

The Lorsch Abbey was founded in 764 by Cancor and his mother Williswinda Frankish Count. The monastery was inhabited by Benedictine monks of the monastery Gorze at Metz. In a document from the year 885, the abbey was mentioned as " Lauressam ", from the present city name has evolved over time. The Abbey was a powerful empire monastery possessions in the Odenwald, on the mountain road, in Rheinhessen, in the Palatinate, Alsace and Lorraine in the early and high Middle Ages.

Events

In Lorsch takes place every Shrove Tuesday instead of a big carnival parade with over 100 train numbers, which each year attracts thousands of fools in the monastery town.
