Los Andes Department

The department Los Andes is located in the west of the province of Salta in northwestern Argentina and is one of 23 administrative units in the province. It is the largest and most sparsely populated department of the province of Salta.

It is bordered to the north by the province of Jujuy, to the east by the departments of La Poma, Cachi and Molinos, on the south by the province of Catamarca and to the west by Chile.

The capital of the department is San Antonio de los Cobres.

The department belonged from 1902 to 1944 going to Territorio Nacional de los Andes, whose capital was San Antonio. Because of the small population and economic stagnation of the territory but it was incorporated into the province of Salta, the other departments in the provinces of Jujuy and Catamarca.
