Los Baños, Laguna

Los Baños is a town in the Philippine province of Laguna. It is located 63 kilometers southeast of Manila and can be reached from there via the South Luzon Expressway. Los Baños is known for its hot springs. Los Baños is home to the University of the Philippines and the International Rice Research Institute ( IRRI).

Geography

Southwest of Los Baños is the dormant volcano Makiling and in the north the lake Laguna de Bay. Neighboring cities and towns are in the northwest of Calamba City and the East Bay.

Educational and research institutions

Los Baños is home to the University of the Philippines as well as from research institutions such as the International Rice Research Institute ( IRRI), ASEAN Center for Biodiversity, the Philippine Rice Research Institute PHIL RICE and SEAMEO - SEARCA. Thus, the community is temporary home to tens of thousands of students and scientists and other non-natives.

Tourism

Besides its importance as a university and science, Los Baños is a well-known tourist destination. Its proximity to Metro Manila, the resort with hot springs on the weekends popular destinations for the residents of the nearby capital, but also for tourists from other parts of the Philippines and abroad. A known delicacy is the so-called Buko Pie ( coconut cake).

History

The town was founded on September 17, 1615.

Recent history and significant events

In 1979 efforts of the inhabitants have been made to explain the community to " special university zone " to support the development of academic quality. This happened on June 15, 1982 by decree of President Ferdinand Marcos.

On March 17, 1982 Los Baños was declared beyond in another decree on " Agriculture, forestry and life sciences community."

During the Southeast Asian Games 2005 was the newly-built Trace Aquatic Center in Los Baños venue for the competitions in water sports. The headquarters of the ASEAN - Centre for Biodiversity was established on 8 August 2006 at the College of Forestry.
