Los de Abajo (band)
Los de Abajo is a band from Mexico City. They describe themselves as "the first punk salsa band ".
History
Los de Abajo were founded in 1992 as a Latin ska band with four members. Since then they have expanded to a core of eight members and expanded their style with musical influences from rock, salsa, reggae, ska, cumbia, Son Jarocho and Banda. The name " Los de Abajo " refers to the novel by Mariano Azuela (Eng. The legal ones).
Since 1998 they release their albums on Luaka Bop, the record label of David Byrne. For the second album " Cyber Tropic Chilango Power" from the 2002 BBC Award for World Music, the group received in 2003 in the category "Americas".
Los de Abajo be understood as a political band and support the guerrilla organization Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN ).
