Los Gatos is a city in Santa Clara County in the U.S. state of California with about 29,400 inhabitants ( 2010). The city covers an area of 28.903 square kilometers. Los Gatos is located approximately 15 kilometers in a straight line south of the city of San José, with which it connects several streets.
History
The city was founded in 1850 as "Cat City " (Spanish Los Gatos, the cats '). It owes its name to the Wildcats, who were formerly native to this region. Before the start of World War II Los Gatos was a fruit growing area. The software company Audible Magic and Cryptic Studios as well as the online video distributor Netflix have their headquarters in Los Gatos.
Demography
The 2010 Census showed a population number of 29,413. Thus, the population grew compared to 2000 easily, as nearly 28,600 people were still living in the city. The ethnic distribution of the population revealed that a majority of 81 percent were white. The proportion of Hispanics ( Latinos ) was approximately seven percent, which is low in comparison, California. African-Americans and Asian -born citizens were according to the census minorities with a respective share of about one percent. The number of households was 12,355. For every 100 females thus were 92 men.
