Los Lunas is a city in Valencia County in the U.S. state of New Mexico in the United States with 10,034 inhabitants ( 2000). Los Lunas is the county seat ( county seat ) of Valencia County.

Los Lunas is part of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name " Los Lunas " is a partial translation of the name of the Luna family, the first settlers in the region (Spanish: los Luna ).

History

The land was allotted to Don Felix Candelaria in 1716 but within two years it was given the Lunas. Near the town a few battles were fought during the Civil War.

Los Lunas in 1876 administrative headquarters of the Valencia County and is since 1928 Incorporated Village ( self-governing territory ).

Traffic

Interstate 25 runs through the city. The town lies on the railway line Albuquerque -El Paso the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway

Geography

The city is located in the north of the county in the middle of New Mexico, is located to the north 20 miles from Albuquerque and has a total area of 26.0 km ² without significant water surface.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 10,034 people in 3,601 households and 2,689 families. The population density was 385.5 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 64.14 % White, 1.16% African American 2.62 % Native American, 0.50 % Asian, 0.06 % Pacific Islander residents from, 27.63 % from other races, and 3.90% or more races. 58.74 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 3,601 households out of which 41.9 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.8 % were married couples living together, 16.8 % had a female householder with no husband, and 25.3% were non-families. 20.7 % of all households are made up and in 5.8 % have someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.16 persons.

In relation to the entire town the population was spread out with 31.1 % under the age of 18, 9.6 % from 18 to 24, 30.1% between 25 and 44 years, 20.2% between 45 and 64 years and 8.9% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.1 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 36,240, and the median income for a family was $ 37,255. Males had a median income of $ 30,664, women $ 22,437. The per capita income was $ 14,692. 11.6 % of families and 13.5 % of the population were below the poverty line (including 18.3 % of children and 7.3 % of people over 65 years ).
