Los Reyes de Salgado is a city in the Mexican state of Michoacan. It is the capital of the municipality of Los Reyes. The city is located 1,300 meters above sea level and has 32,488 inhabitants ( census 2005).

History

1831 the municipality of Los Reyes is founded. Los Santos Reyes demographically and economically evolving and in 1837 the capital of the district Poniente. The village is now the urban center in the valley of Peribán. 1859 Los Santos Reyes is promoted by decision of the Congress of the State of the villa and henceforth bears the name of Villa de Salgado in memory of Don José Francisco Salgado Trinidad Rentería, a native of Los Reyes second governor of Michoacán. 1861, the city becomes a district.

On April 19, 1865 a battle between Republican forces under General Salazar and French interventionists took place.

In 1921 the name was changed to Los Reyes de Salgado. On 20 June 1950, Los Reyes de Salgado officially classified as a city (Ciudad).

Attractions

In the neighborhood of Los Reyes de Salgado are the waterfalls of El Salto, Los Chorros del varal and La Palangana.

Economy

The economy is dominated by agriculture, retail trade and the service sector. Los Reyes de Salgado is the economic center of the area.

The sugar cane cultivation played a major role since the founding of the city. Sugar and alcohol factories moved into the area. Since then, Mexico increasingly imported sugar from Cuba, was missed in the cultivation of fruit. Especially, among others but also avocados, agave, peaches strawberries blackberries and are cultivated.
