Lothar Kempter

Lothar Kempter ( born February 5, 1844 in Lauingen; † July 14, 1918 in Vitznau ) was a German -Swiss composer and conductor.

Life

On the Father, the Lauinger church musician and music teacher seminar Friedrich Kempter request, he began studying law at the University of Munich. 1868 - after the father had died - he turned to music. At the Royal School of Music in Munich, he studied with Hans von Bülow ensemble, Josef Rheinberger composition, Franz Wüllner choral singing and Karl Baermann piano.

In 1871 he moved to Magdeburg, where it is the second conductor of the orchestra at the theater. In the same year he married the singer Caroline Leonoff. He then gained a further three years orchestral experience at the Strasbourg theater. In 1875 he was hired by the stock theater in Zurich as Kapellmeister. In 1879 he became director of the Tonhalle concert. In 1886 he took over for nearly thirty years the office of teacher of theory and composition at the Zurich School of Music. In 1892 he was awarded the Zurich citizenship. 1911 honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich, he was awarded. From 1875 to 1915 he conducted the opera orchestra and thus has a great contribution to the development of musical life, especially in the dissemination and establishment of the music dramas of Richard Wagner, performed in the largest city of Switzerland.

His oeuvre includes works for the stage, festivals, songs, male choruses, cantatas and some instrumental works.
