Lothar Koch (Oboist)

Lothar Koch ( born July 1, 1935 in Velbert, † 16 March 2003) was a German oboist.

Koch studied at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen. First, he was principal oboe of the Philharmonic Orchestra in Freiburg im Breisgau. In 1957 he was appointed soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan. In 1961, Koch along with other soloists of the orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Soloists. In the same year he began teaching at the Municipal Conservatory of Berlin. In addition to chamber music and masterclasses he also taught, which was founded in 1972 Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic. In 1978 he founded, together with other instrumental soloists, the Wind Ensemble of the Berlin Philharmonic, with whom he often appeared at the Salzburg Festival. In 1990, a cook at a visiting professorship at the Salzburg Mozarteum, 1991, he was appointed full professor of oboe. He taught until 1996 as a lecturer at the International Summer Academy of the Mozarteum University. He died on 16 March 2003 to the effects of long -standing disease.

Lothar Koch has made world-wide concert tours as a solo oboist and in chamber music ensembles and recorded many recordings, including solo concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Richard Strauss and Hans- Jürgen von Bose. He is considered a world-class musicians, not least because of his singing full sound. When the Berlin Philharmonic, he was particularly appreciated for its distinctive rhythmic precision.
