Lothar Koenigs

Life

Lothar Koenigs attended the Kaiser -Karls -Gymnasium in Aachen and then studied piano and conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. After graduation, he had engagements in Hagen, Münster and Bonn. From 2000 to 2003 he was musical director at the opera house in Osnabrück. Since 2009, Lothar Koenigs Music Director of the Welsh National Opera.

At the Opéra National de Lyon, he conducted in 2003, Alban Berg's Wozzeck. This is followed by engagements joined at the Dresden Semper Opera with Don Giovanni and at the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York with Don Giovanni. In 2004 he conducted in Lyon a Janácek cycle with Jenufa, Katya Kabanowa and The Makropulos Case. In 2006 he conducted the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and accompanied with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Wagner program of heroic tenor Ben Heppner. In Lyon, he opened with the opera Lohengrin season 2006/07.

Koenigs guested in other countries such as Chile, Russia, Japan and Italy. His repertoire includes some 40 operas.
