Lothar Thoms

Lothar Thoms ( born May 18, 1956 in Guben, district Cottbus ) is a former German cyclist.

Life

Thoms is a former German track cyclist from East Germany, who had his greatest successes in the 1000 -meter time trial: In 1980 he was winner of the Olympic Games in Moscow (world record: 1:02,995 minutes on 22 July). From 1977 to 1981 he won four times the world title in a row - an achievement that could only repeat the Frenchman Arnaud Tournant 1998 to 2001 in the 1000 -m time trial. 1981 Lothar Thoms Cycliste from the International Cycling Union Union International was voted " world's best cyclists " as well as the East German athlete of the year. For winning the gold medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. In 1984 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold.

In 1982 he finished second ( behind Fredy Schmidtke, Federal Republic) and third in the 1983 World Championships.

Lothar Thoms started for the SC Cottbus and trained with Gerd Müller.

After the end of his athletic career in 1985, he worked as a sports official and after the end of the GDR as an administrative clerk and physiotherapist.
