Lough Derg (Ulster)
The Lough Derg (Irish Loch Dearg, dt " Red Sea" ) is a lake in Ireland's County Donegal in the Ulster region, near the border with Northern Ireland.
Geography
The lake with an area of approximately 888 hectares located approximately six miles north of the border village of Pettigo.
Place of pilgrimage
In Lough Derg are several islands; Saints on Iceland ( Oileán na Naomh ) was in the Middle Ages, a monastery. At Station Iceland ( Inis to Turai ), is the Purgatory of St. Patrick, an old place of pilgrimage, which attracts about 35,000 pilgrims annually.
Bird sanctuary
The lake is a designated bird sanctuary.
