Louis-Antoine Ranvier

Louis -Antoine Ranvier ( born October 2, 1835 in Lyon, † March 22, 1922 in Vendranges ) was a French anatomist.

Life

Ranvier studied medicine in Lyon and acquired in 1865 the title of doctor. Together with Victor André Cornil (1837-1908), he founded a small private laboratory in which they offered a Histology for medical students. Both also wrote a textbook on histopathology.

In 1867 he became assistant and taxidermist at Claude Bernard at the Collège de France. In 1875 he got to give this university the Chair of Anatomy. In 1897 he founded with Edouard -Gérard Balbiani ( 1823-1899 ), the journal Archives d' anatomie microscopique. In 1900 he became Professor Emeritus.

Ranvier found out in 1878 that the 1854 discovered by Rudolf Virchow myelin forms a lipid-rich, insulating sheath, which wraps the nerve fibers. The annular constrictions are named after him ( Node of Ranvier ). The myelin sheath allows the so-called saltatory conduction in nerve.
