Louis Auchincloss

Louis Stanton Auchincloss ( born September 27, 1917 in Lawrence, New York, † January 26, 2010 in Manhattan, New York) was an American writer.

Life

Auchincloss was born into an upper class family, which owes its wealth to the founder of the family empire, Hugh Auchincloss, a Scottish merchant from Paisley. He grew up in Manhattan and first attended the prestigious private school in St. Bernard 's School, the elite school Groton School, founded in 1884 by Endicott Peabody and the support of Theodore Roosevelt enjoyed. From 1935 Auchincloss studied at the University of Yale Law, where he admitted much space his interest in the English and French literature and the Yale Literary Magazine published. In 1938 he abandoned his studies at Yale from not finish and put it at the University of Virginia School of Law continued in Charlottesville. Subsequently, he worked at the law firm Sullivan and Cromwell and wrote parallel to his job as a lawyer novels, short stories and non-fiction.

Works

Auchincloss was very productive as a writer. In 30 novels and 15 short stories, he described the world of high society from which he came. Best known he was by the multi-generational sagas The House of Five Talents, Portrait in Brownstone, and East Side Story as well as by the rector, a story about a schoolmaster, obviously inspired by his own time at Endicott Peabody Groton School and The Society of rich, a thriller from the world of pinstripes. Auchincloss in 1965 was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, 2005, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts.
