Louis Constantin de Rohan (1697–1779)

Louis César Constantin de Rohan Guéméné (born 24 March 1697 in Paris, † March 11, 1779 ) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church and the bishop of Strasbourg.

Biography

He was in Paris as the seventh son of Charles III. by Rohan, 5th Duke of Montbazon, Prince of Guéméné ( 1655-1727 ) and his second wife Charlotte Elisabeth de Cochefilet ( 1657-1719 ) was born. His older brother Jules Armand (1695-1762) was Archbishop of Reims.

He studied canon law at the Sorbonne in Paris. 1720, he joined the Order of Knights of Malta and was captain of the fleet. In Paris, he gained after completing his studies, a licentiate in canon law. In Strasbourg, where he was a canon, he rose to the provost. He was also abbot of Lire, and later by Saint- Epure. At the same time he was also Grand Almoner of the Kingdom of France.

The cathedral chapter of Strasbourg on September 23, 1756 elected him a bishop than what it Pope Benedict XIV confirmed on January 3, 1757.
