Louis Couperin

Louis Couperin (c. 1626 Chaumes -en -Brie, August 291661 in Paris) was a French composer, organist and violinist.

Louis Couperin, uncle of François Couperin, was one of the most famous members of the Couperin family and one of the best composers of keyboard music of the 17th century. Little is known about his first 23 years of life. 1650 took him Jacques Champion de Chambonnières, famous harpsichordist, violinist and composer in Paris under his wing. Three years later Louis took the first of his dynasty to the organist at St- Gervais, which he held until his death. He also played as an organist, harpsichordist and violist in chamber music ensemble of Louis XIV

Most notable among his harpsichord compositions are his Préludes non Mesures ( " Preludes without bar lines ") that reveal the influence of Johann Jakob Froberger, and his Chaconnes.

The asteroid ( 6798 ) Couperin was named after him.
