Louis de Grandpré

Louis Marie Joseph de Grandpré Ohier ( born May 7, 1761 Saint- Malo, † January 7, 1846 in Paris) was a French boat and captain and naturalist.

Life

The ship's captain Louis Marie Joseph de Grandpré Ohier, Knight of Saint - Louis - Order, was born on May 7, 1761 Saint- Malo. His parents were Louis Athanase Ohier, slave ship captain with Irish ancestry, and Nicole Marie Louise Merven from a family from the Valais.

At six years old he came to school in Rennes. His interest in seafaring prompted him to quit school early and become a sailor. He soon proved himself in the ensuing war with England. In March 1781 he was struggling on the fleet of Vice-Admiral Pierre André de Suffren, which expired from Brest to India by there against the British fleet.

After the peace agreement of 1783 gave him shipowners from La Rochelle in command of three ships for trips to the West African coast. This was probably transports in the slave trade. On November 29, 1783, he married Marie Thérèse de Jehannot Penquer ( 1762-1837 ) on the island of Mauritius.

In 1789 he bought in Bordeaux the frigate " La jeune Créole ". Under his command, and together with his wife and some family members he drove it on a trip to Asia during which he also made natural history observations. When in 1792 the British Pondicherry, the French colony in India, occupy, he organized the escape of the French governor. 1793/94 he spent 10 months in Cape Town in British captivity. In 1795 he was able to return to the Navy. As a Royalist, he was arrested in 1797 but escaped with the help of a powerful horse. In 1801 he was imprisoned in Temple in Paris but soon dismissed by the Minister of Police Joseph Fouché.

In the following years he devoted himself to science and literature. In 1801 he published books about his trips to Africa and Asia. He translated Travelogues from English into French by J. Barrow, J. Malham, M. Morritt and Taylor. He published a dictionary of Seegeographie and a handbook for locksmiths. Some of his works have been translated launched in Germany.

He died on January 7, 1846 in Paris.
