Louis II, Grand Duke of Baden

Louis II, Grand Duke of Baden ( born August 15, 1824 in Karlsruhe, † January 22, 1858 ibid ) was 1852-1856 Grand Duke of the Grand Duchy of Baden. For him, his younger brother Friedrich ruled as regent.

Family

Grand Duke Ludwig II was the son of Leopold, Grand Duke of Baden (1790-1852) and Sophie Wilhelmine von Holstein -Gottorp, Princess of Sweden ( 1801-1865 ). He was the grandson of Karl Friedrich (1728-1811) and Louise Caroline Geyer of Geyer Berg, Countess of Hochberg ( 1768-1820 ).

Life

Grand Duke Ludwig II was born on August 15, 1824. Together with his younger brother Frederick, he was a highly modern education. Travel to Northern Italy and the Netherlands brought a change in the daily lives of siblings. From December 1842 until May 1843 and Friedrich Ludwig learned the most important men in the capital of the Habsburg Empire to know; thrilled they absorbed the vibrant city life into itself. The stay in Vienna was clouded, however, by a serious illness of Frederick. Louis studied at the University of Heidelberg.

Louis was a prince of the house of Baden 1842-1852 Member of the First Chamber of the States General Baden, but only took in 1842 and 1846 personally attend the meetings. He was christened on April 24, 1852 the title of Grand Duke of Baden, but was considered insane and thus as incapable of governing. That's why he left the official duties to his brother Frederick, who in 1856 assumed the title of Grand Duke.

Ludwig II of Baden was an honorary citizen of the city of Karlsruhe. He died at the age of 33 years. Grand Duke Friedrich I wrote after the death of his brother, a poor life full of misery and suffering.
