Louis J. Camuti

Louis Joseph Camuti (* 1893 in Parma, † February 24, 1981 near Mount Vernon, New York) was an American veterinarian and author of Italian descent.

Life

Camuti came from a traditional, based in Parma, northern Italian family which had produced many generations and veterinarians. His parents emigrated to the then nine -year-old Louis and his younger brother in the United States, they came to New York on March 17, 1902. Camutis father imported Italian products and was able to finance his son study so that Camuti first studied agronomy, before he threw a coin in his own words and so decided against the human and for veterinary medicine. His studies were interrupted by military service during the First World War, the he performed in the U.S., he graduated in 1920 at New York University from.

Right at the beginning of his career, he had his practice of horses, which were increasingly replaced as work animals of cars, switch to pets such as dogs and cats. After several failed attempts, he succeeded in building a working practice in Mount Vernon, later he moved to Park Avenue. He specialized with time on cats, which he later treated mainly through home visits, which he carried out from late afternoon until evening. In 1960 he fell ill with a dog and cat dander and could only practice with the help of medications further. He became known in New York as the "cat doctor" and practiced for over 60 years. About his work, he wrote two books, of which especially the second, titled All my patients are under the bed was an international success and to this day in Germany alone reached 11 editions.

Camuti died when still a practicing veterinarian of a heart attack at the wheel of his car on the way back to his home in Mount Vernon. He was married from 1920 until his death with the also Italian -born Alexandra Landi, they had a daughter and a son. The Foundation Dr. Louis J. Camuti Memorial Endowment Fund continues his life's work, and maintains the Dr. Louis J. Camuti Memorial Feline Consultation Service at Cornell University.
