Louis Martin (weightlifter)

Louis George Martin ( born November 11, 1936 in Kingston, Jamaica ) is a former English weightlifter.

Career

Louis Martin grew up in Jamaica and came to England at age 19. There he played in the school cricket and operational bodybuilding. It was not until the age of 22 he started lifting weights, but had to have excellent physical conditions. As his talent was recognized early, he got all the support from the British Weightlifting Association. His coach was the British Association Coach Al Murray. In 1959, he won his first British Championship and surprised at the World Championships the same year, which was held in Warsaw, the world's elite, winning the middleweight title Heavyweight ( up to 90 kg body weight). Then until 1966 he launched with great success at international championships and was three times world champion. It him but never succeeded in becoming Olympic champion. A silver and one bronze medal were his haul at the Games in 1960 and 1964.
