Louis Michel

Louis Michel [ lwi miʃɛl ] ( born September 2, 1947 in Tienen ) is a Belgian politician and Member of the European Parliament.

Life

He studied Indo-European studies and taught in Jodoigne. Michel is the most prominent member of the French-speaking liberal party Mouvement Réformateur ( MR). From 1980 to 1982 he was the political secretary general, between 1982 to 1990 and 1995 to 1999 he was president of the party.

He was elected in 1978 to the Belgian Parliament. Between 1992 and 1995, he was Group President and Vice- President of the Liberal International. In 1995 he was Minister of State.

Between 1978 and 1999 he was mayor of Jodoigne. He was foreign and foreign trade minister of his country in 1999.

From 2004 to 2009 he was Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid in the EU Commission Barroso. In the European elections in 2009 Michel stood as the top candidate and his party reached a seat in the European Parliament.

He is married and has two children.

Criticism

Michels is of Belgian media and Lobbyplag accused to have provided more than 100 applications for industry-standard softening of data protection. Michels himself declared that he had never seen the amendments, known or signed. The applications were submitted and signed by his assistant Luc Paque.
