Louis of Granada

Fray Luis de Granada ( Granada * 1504, † December 31, 1588 in Porto Gallo at Lisbon, in German editions of his works often as Louis of Granada called; actually Luis de Sarría ) was a Spanish mystic, priest of the Dominican Order and spiritual writer.

Life

As the son of poor parents, was a Dominican friar Luis de Granada in Granada in 1524. After 1544 he preached for 10 years in Córdoba. In 1557 it took over the leadership of the Portuguese Dominicans and was spiritual adviser of Queen Joan of Spain ( 1535-1573 ). Luis wrote many works on asceticism and meditation; his most important books were De la oración ( 1533) and Guia de pecadores ( 1555). This "Guide to Sinful " or the charioteer of sinners was investigated by the Inquisition, but it then dropped the suspicion that Luis ideas resembled those of Alumbrados. Pope Gregory XIII. wrote to Luis de Granada: "To have read with benefit many your writings, so many sons you have Christo created and shown them a far greater blessing than you do in the face and dead begs the life of God blind man could have. " ( reprinted on beginning of the charioteer of sinners, German edition 1843)

Luis had great influence on the religious Catholic literature of the late 16th century. His works have also been published repeatedly in German until the 20th century.

Quotes

"Prayer is an elevation of the soul of himself and all created things, an agreement with God and a sinking into the depths of the immense sweetness and in the ocean of divine love. Prayer is the output of the soul to receive God when he comes to her. She pulls him to him as a neighbor: she takes him with him as in his temple in the hostel on. There she possesses Him, love Him and enjoy Him. Prayer is the position of his soul into God's presence, and the dislocation of God in the presence of the soul, when He sees the soul with eyes of mercy, and God looks at this through the eyes of humility. This Watch has greater force and fertility, than the sight of all the stars and planets of heaven. "

"Prayer is [ ... ] the clearest mirror in which one recognizes God; it also recognizes the people in it with all its faults, imperfections and miseries. Prayer is a daily practice of many virtues, a mortification of the sensual desires, a Brunn source of every good intention and every good desire. "
