Louis of Nassau

Ludwig von Nassau- Dillenburg ( born January 20, 1538April 14, 1574 in Mook en Middelaar ) was a Dutch general. He was the third son of Count William of Nassau- Dillenburg and brother of William I of Orange.

Life

Ludwig became the leader of the Beggars, and was outlawed in 1567 by the Duke of Alba. He then fled to Germany, fell in 1568 from East Frisia in the province of Groningen in. Here he struck on May 23 the Spaniards at the Battle of Heiligerlee, when he lost his younger brother Adolf. On July 21, he was then, however, defeated by the Duke of Alva at the Battle of Jemgum on the Ems.

Later, Ludwig fought in France on the side of the Huguenots and fell with the help of 1572 into the Netherlands. He took on May 25, Mons, however, the city had passed on September 19 to the Duke of Alba. Furthermore, he was able to conquer the city of Bergen, which was, however, taken on September 6, 1572 by the Spanish, where Ludwig was taken prisoner.

1574 Ludwig fell again into the Netherlands. He was, however, defeated on the 14th of April at the Mook Heath and found in this battle as well as his brother Henry 's death.
