Louis Remy de la Fosse

Louis Rémy de la Fosse (* about 1659 in France, † September 17, 1726 in Darmstadt ) was a French architect of the baroque, who worked in Germany.

Origin and family

Little is known about his background and education. Maybe he is the son of the painter Charles de Lafosse. He probably emigrated to the revocation of the Edict of Nantes from France to Germany. It is highly probable father of the cartographer and engraver Georges Louis Le Rouge. Perhaps, therefore, his real name is Nicholas Le Rouge. An emigration from France because of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes is unlikely, since he was buried in 1726 as a Catholic.

Life

Until 1705 he worked as a draftsman in the studio of Johann Friedrich Eosander in Berlin. Be unexecuted design for the Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin has been handed down from the year 1705. At the beginning of 1706 he was appointed first architect at the court of Georg Ludwig in Hanover. From 1706 to 1709 he worked in Hanover, in the years 1710 and 1711 in Kassel and in the subsequent period to 1714 again in Hannover. From 1714 he was a senior engineer in Darmstadt in the service of the Landgrave Ernst Ludwig of Hesse -Darmstadt and directed until his death the entire civil and military construction. He was also responsible for the regulation of the Rhine and the associated hydraulic structures. Furthermore, the plan for a hedge theater goes back in the big garden by Mr. Hausen on him; the picture can be found in engravings by Georges Louis Le Rouge.
